Earth: the planet we must not overlook

Someone says that Tuvalu is going to sink someday in the future. I am scared of the sea level rise.

     This is what frightens the Tuvaluan girl most and concerns Tuvaluan children most. Tuvalu, an island sinking because of global warming, is suffering the rebound of nature from the convenience of human civilization. Tuvaluans have become the first group of environmental victims as a result of the continually rising oceans and unmanageable garbage hills. Instead of a catastrophe to Tuvaluans, it might happen elsewhere on earth.
     A plastic bag or a pair of disposable chopsticks brings us convenience but it also brings earth non-decomposable garbage. A lamb chop or beef noodle soup is delicious but also accelerates the pace of global warming. Though it is convenient to ride a motorcycle to work and take elevators instead of stairs, it also emits a large amount of carbon dioxide. These seemingly natural parts of daily life hold the balance of all life forms on the earth. Environmental protection has become a widespread slogan after it has been broadly publicized in newspapers and magazines. Nonetheless, the pace of global warming gives us no time to gradually promote environmental protection. Because we will never know how global warming threatens life the next minute. For this reason, environmental protection needs desperate and immediate concern.
     How to protect Earth? To begin with our soul is the most basic and most important thing we have. Master Sheng Yen once mentioned, environmental protection is on earth a lifestyle, i.e. simple life that urges lesser material demand but more spiritual nourishment, as well as valuing objects and cherishing fortune. As far as we can begin from our soil and identify ourselves as a part of nature, everyone can do its part for Earth. Instead of sacrifice, the effect of efforts for environmental protection is joy.
     There are rural scenes everywhere in the forest, seaside, and fields in Chiayi County, where folks are friendly and fine, and the print of its beauty has long been cast upon the mind of the public. In order to maintain this gift richly endowed by nature, environmental care activities must not be overlooked. The local environmental protection bureau thus aggressively promotes a wide range of environment-related activities, such as cleaning the streets, cleaning beaches, garbage classification, saving energy and reducing carbon, recycled furniture auctions, pollution control and prevention, reporting of vehicles with too many emissions, diversification of kitchen waste use, and provision of smooth channels for public petitions. These are endeavors to beautify the environment and to turn the city into a happy city for living and development.
     However beautiful your hometown is, it would merely be a ruin for our dependents if we do not value and care for it, and the graceful scenery of Alishan will become part of our memory. Let us apply for an environmental book, value the precious resources in the environment, care about every blade of grass and every tree in our hometown, and save the beauty of earth for our children.
